History

The Mayans considered its lagoon as a fountain of youth.
In Mayan, HOLBOX means �dark hole�, due to its cenotes (sinkholes) and its natural springs. Pirates constantly visited the island, as it was strategically located. In 1873, European sailors fell in love with the island and decided to settle there.
Today, HOLBOX receives governmental support to promote tourism and to help maintain its flora and fauna.
